ABOUT THIS EVENT
For the month of June 2024, the Cedar Cultural Center is leading a cross-sector partnership to create a large-scale mural on the building's facade directly facing the plaza as part of our 35th anniversary year celebration as the Midwest's home for international and local live music.
Two of the region's most beloved muralists, Leslie Barlow, and Hibaaq Ibrahim have been commissioned to design and create the new work, both artists carrying deep connections to the Cedar Riverside neighborhood.
On Saturday, June 8th from 12-4 PM, our artists will switch hats from muralists to teaching artists and allow all our neighbors and youth to contribute to the mural's creation on site.
This event will feature complimentary refreshments and music by local all-vinyl DJ’s Douala Soul Collective.
Don't miss out on this inspiring celebration of art and community! Join us at Community Paint Day and be a part of history in the making!
Note: in the event of rain, Community Paint day will take place on Sunday, June 9th from 12pm to 4pm.
LESLIE BARLOW
Leslie Barlow is a visual artist, educator, and cultural worker from Minneapolis, MN. Barlow believes art and art making is both healing and liberatory, through the power of representation, witnessing and storytelling. Her life-sized oil paintings are inspired by community and personal experiences, and often serve as both monuments to community members and explorations into how race entangles the intimate sphere of love, family, and friendship. Barlow is a recipient of the 2021 Jerome Hill Fellowship, 2019 McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship, the 20/20 Springboard Fellowship, and five MN State Arts Board grants between 2016 and 2023.
