ABOUT THIS SHOW
Afro Dead is a musical collective formed in 2022 by Aaron Feder to reimagine the music of the Grateful Dead in Afro-Pop styles, such as soukous, Afrobeat, high-life, reggae and more. Featuring members of Chicago’s Alma Afrobeat Ensemble, Afro Dead make their Cedar debut with support from Minnesota’s Demitrious Rallis Band (Frogleg).
Afro Dead
AFRO DEAD is a musical collective formed in 2022 by Aaron Feder (musical director/multi-instrumentalist/producer) to reimagine the music of legendary American roots band, the Grateful Dead, in various African musical styles. The projectfeatures Chicago based singer London Kay, best known for her work with Terrapin Flyer and having toured with Heart.
The collective takes songs of the psychedelic pioneers The Grateful Dead, and re-arranges them, changing the grooves to afro-pop styles, such as Soukous, Afrobeat, High-Life, Reggae and more, thanks to Aaron's experience as founder and bandleader of Alma Afrobeat Ensemble (four albums, four US tours) and co-founder of the record label Slow Walk Music (home to African music made in Spain). AFRO DEAD is a musical collective with special guests on every stop of their tours; each show is a unique experience, bringing together Deadheads and world music fans wherever they play globally.
Aaron Feder has been a lifelong participant in the Grateful Dead’s music scene, having played and recorded with Grammy award winners Peter Rowan and Eric Krasno, as well as members of Phil Lesh and Friends, Greensky Bluegrass, Leftover Salmon, Everyone Orchestra and much more. Aaron’s varied musical experiences has helped create a vibrant, one-of-a-kind musical project, mixing classic Americana compositions with danceable African grooves and a healthy dose of improvisation.
In 2026 so far, the band has toured the West Coast and Midwest of the US, playing well-known Grateful Dead and World Music venues such as the Ashkenaz (Berkeley), The Lodge Room (LA), The Cedar Cultural Center (Minneapolis) and the Epiphany Arts Center (Chicago).
The band’s version of Dark Star was featured on the compilation “The Music Plays the Band” alongside Dark Star Orchestra, Oteil Burbridge, ALO and many more.
